About

The Japanese Garden at the Montreal Botanical Garden is a traditional Japanese-style landscape designed for contemplation, but kids find plenty to enjoy in its waterfalls, stone paths, and koi-filled streams. It's one of the most popular sections of the garden for families.

The design follows the principles of a Japanese stroll garden, meaning you walk a circuit path that reveals new views at each turn. For kids, this creates a sense of discovery. Around one bend there's a waterfall, around the next a stone lantern, then a bridge over a stream with koi swimming below.

The koi pond is the biggest hit with young children. Like the Chinese Garden, the fish are colorful and active, and kids can watch them for extended periods. The difference here is the more naturalistic setting, with moss-covered stones and carefully placed rocks that make it feel wild rather than formal.

The bonsai and penjing collection is displayed in a separate area and tends to fascinate kids ages 8 and up. Seeing trees that are decades or even centuries old but only a few feet tall blows their minds. Younger kids appreciate the tiny trees too, though they'll move through faster.

The garden has a peaceful tea house pavilion where families can rest. The paths are paved and stroller-accessible, though a few sections have gentle slopes. Fall foliage in October transforms the garden with reds, oranges, and yellows that make it one of the most photographed spots in the Botanical Garden.

Plan 45 minutes to an hour as part of a larger garden visit. The Japanese Garden is adjacent to the Chinese Garden, so visiting both back-to-back lets kids compare the different styles.

Why Kids Love It

The waterfall, koi pond, and stone bridges make this garden feel like a real adventure trail. Kids love crossing the wooden bridges and spotting fish in the clear water. The bonsai collection fascinates older kids who can't believe trees can be that small and old.
