About
Cap-Saint-Jacques is Montreal's largest nature park, covering over 280 hectares at the western tip of the island where Lac des Deux Montagnes meets Rivière des Prairies. The outdoor center here is the hub for organized activities — equipment rentals, beach access, and seasonal programming.
In summer, the main draw for families is the supervised beach. It's one of the few swimmable beaches on the island of Montreal, with sandy shoreline and shallow entry that works for younger kids. Beyond the beach, there are hiking trails through mature forest, a small organic farm, and kayak and paddleboard rentals.
The trails are mostly flat and well-marked, though not all are paved — jogger strollers handle the main paths fine, but umbrella strollers won't cut it.
Winter transforms the park into a cross-country skiing and snowshoeing destination. The groomed trails wind through snow-covered woods and offer a quiet alternative to the crowded slopes at commercial ski hills. Equipment rentals are available at the center.
The park is in Pierrefonds, about 30-40 minutes from downtown Montreal by car. Parking can fill up on hot summer weekends, so arrive early or come on a weekday. There's no real food service beyond vending machines, so pack a proper picnic. The organic farm sometimes sells produce in season.
With a 4.5 Google rating and hundreds of reviews, this is a well-loved spot. It's one of the best places in Montreal to give kids a genuine nature experience without a long drive out of the city.
