About
Ashbridges Bay is a large lakefront park on Lake Shore Boulevard East in Toronto's east end that combines a sandy beach, boat launch, skateboard park, volleyball courts, cycling trails, and plenty of picnic space. It's one of the most versatile family-friendly outdoor spots in the city.
The beach stretches along the south side of the park with a long strip of sand and shallow water. It's a popular swimming spot in summer, though you should always check the city's water quality postings before letting kids swim. The water is calm and stays shallow for a good distance, which is ideal for toddlers wading and little kids playing in the waves.
The Martin Goodman Trail runs through the park, making it excellent for family bike rides, rollerblading, and scootering. The trail is paved and flat, connecting east to the Beaches neighbourhood and west toward downtown. The skateboard park on the east side attracts older kids and teens — it's one of the larger skate parks in Toronto.
There are volleyball nets set up in summer, a large grassy area for frisbee or kite-flying, and plenty of picnic tables. The boat launch area gives kids a front-row seat to watch sailboats and motorboats heading out onto the lake, which can hold a toddler's attention for a surprisingly long time.
Parking is the main challenge. The lot fills up fast on summer weekends, especially when events are running. Arriving before 10 AM on a Saturday is essential, or better yet, bike in via the Martin Goodman Trail. Public washrooms are available but can be basic. There are sometimes food trucks in the park during summer weekends.
Ashbridges Bay is a strong full-morning or full-afternoon family outing. Between the beach, trails, skate park, and boat-watching, there's enough variety to keep kids of all ages occupied for several hours.
