Perforated Pool

Perforated Pool is one of Yellowstone National Park's more visually striking thermal features, located along the scenic Firehole Lake Drive loop road in the Lower Geyser Basin. Named for the porous, sinter-edged rim that gives its shoreline a lace-like appearance, this vivid hot spring offers families a close-up look at Yellowstone's extraordinary geothermal geology in a setting that feels almost otherworldly.

The pool's vivid blue and green colors, surrounded by steam and delicate mineral formations, make it one of the more photogenic stops on Firehole Lake Drive. Kids are typically mesmerized by the colors and the bubbling activity just below the surface, and the paved boardwalk sections make it accessible to strollers and younger visitors.

Perforated Pool is best visited as part of the Firehole Lake Drive loop, which also passes Great Fountain Geyser and White Dome Geyser. The route is a one-way, approximately three-mile loop that can be driven in 20 to 30 minutes with stops, or walked in sections if families prefer a more leisurely pace.

As with all thermal features in Yellowstone, supervision of children is essential. The water in Perforated Pool reaches near-boiling temperatures, and the edges of the feature can be unstable. Stay on boardwalks and established trails at all times, and remind children of the strict rules around thermal areas before approaching.
