About
Canada Place is Vancouver's iconic waterfront complex, recognizable by its white sail-shaped roof designed to echo the sails of a ship. It juts out into Burrard Inlet and serves as the city's cruise ship terminal, convention centre, and public gathering space.
For families, the main attraction is the outdoor promenade that wraps around the building. It's a flat, paved walkway with panoramic views of the North Shore mountains, Stanley Park, and the busy harbor. Kids love watching the floatplanes take off and land at the adjacent terminal, spotting cruise ships docked at the terminal, and looking for seals and other marine life in the water below.
The promenade also features the Canadian Trail, an outdoor walking path with displays about each province and territory. It's educational in a casual, self-guided way — kids can read about different parts of Canada as they walk. Public art installations and viewpoints are spaced along the route.
FlyOver Canada is the major paid attraction inside Canada Place. It's a flight simulation ride that uses a large dome screen, moving seats, wind, and scent effects to create the feeling of flying over Canadian landscapes — from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic coast. The ride lasts about 8 minutes and is suitable for kids about 5 and older (minimum height requirement of 102 cm).
It's well-done and a genuine thrill for first-time riders.
Food options include several restaurants and cafes in and around the building. Cactus Club at Canada Place has harbor views and a kids' menu. The food court in the adjacent convention centre has more casual options.
Canada Place is easily accessible by transit (Waterfront Station is adjacent) or car (nearby parking garages). It connects to the seawall for walking or biking to Stanley Park. On clear days, spending an hour on the promenade followed by FlyOver Canada makes for a solid family outing.
