Ward's Island Beach

Ward's Island Beach is one of the Toronto Islands' best-kept family secrets. While most tourists head to Centre Island, Ward's Island offers a quieter, more relaxed beach experience with the same beautiful views of the Toronto skyline across the harbour. The beach has fine sand, shallow water that warms up nicely in summer, and lifeguards on duty during peak season.

The beach sits on the south side of Ward's Island, facing Lake Ontario. There's a playground nearby with swings, climbing equipment, and ping-pong tables, which gives kids options beyond just the sand and water. Picnic tables and a gazebo provide shaded eating spots, though shade on the beach itself is limited — bring your own umbrella or tent.

Getting to Ward's Island requires the ferry from Jack Layton Ferry Terminal at the foot of Bay Street. The Ward's Island ferry is generally less crowded than the Centre Island one, which is a major advantage for families. The ride takes about 15 minutes.

Once you dock, the beach is a short walk from the terminal through a quiet residential neighbourhood — one of the most unique communities in Toronto, with small cottages and gardens lining car-free lanes.

There are very few food options on Ward's Island. The Island Cafe operates seasonally but options are limited. Smart families pack a full cooler. Public washrooms are available near the beach and at the ferry terminal.

The beach can get a bit rocky in spots along the shoreline, so water shoes are helpful for younger kids. The water is calm and shallow for a good distance out, making it safe for toddlers to wade. Check the city's water quality advisories before swimming.
