About

Royal Botanical Gardens spans over 2,700 acres between Burlington and Hamilton, about an hour's drive west of downtown Toronto. It's Canada's largest botanical garden, combining cultivated display gardens with wild nature sanctuaries, trails, and a massive arboretum.

For families, the key areas are the Rock Garden (terraced flower beds and a waterfall), Hendrie Park (the main cultivated gardens with a dedicated Children's Garden), and the nature trails through Cootes Paradise. The Children's Garden is the standout for younger kids, offering hands-on planting activities, a butterfly garden, and sensory stations.

The trails through Cootes Paradise are flat, boardwalk-style paths that pass through marshland and forests. Kids spot turtles, frogs, herons, and other wildlife along the way. The boardwalk sections are stroller-accessible, though some dirt trails beyond the boardwalks are not.

Seasonal highlights drive the best family visits. The lilac celebration in late May features over 800 lilac bushes in bloom. The rose garden peaks in June and July. Fall color in the arboretum is spectacular in October.

The cultivated gardens require admission tickets, but the nature sanctuaries and trails are free year-round — an important distinction for budget-conscious families. The RBG Centre building houses rotating exhibits, a gift shop, and a cafe with kid-friendly meals.

Strollers work on paved paths and boardwalks but struggle on nature trails. The gardens are spread across multiple locations connected by car, so plan which sections to visit before arriving. The Rock Garden and Hendrie Park are the most family-friendly starting points.

Parking is available at each garden section. The RBG is not easily accessible by TTC — driving is the practical option from Toronto.

Why Kids Love It

The Children's Garden has hands-on planting stations where kids can dig in real soil and water plants themselves. The walking trails through Cootes Paradise feel like a nature expedition with turtles and birds along the boardwalks. In spring, the lilac garden surrounds kids with thousands of fragrant flowers — even reluctant nature lovers enjoy it.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Start at Hendrie Park and the Children's Garden — it's the most kid-focused section
  • The nature trails at Cootes Paradise are free — save money by combining paid garden visits with free trail walks
  • Visit in late May for the lilac bloom — the fragrance alone is worth the trip
  • Bring binoculars for the Cootes Paradise trails — turtles, herons, and other wildlife are common
  • The gardens are spread across multiple locations — drive between them rather than trying to walk

What to Bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes (trails can be muddy after rain)
  • Binoculars for wildlife spotting on trails
