About

The Ontario Science Centre has been one of Toronto's flagship family destinations since 1969. Note: the original Don Mills location closed in 2024 for structural repairs, and the centre has been operating from a temporary location at Harbourfront Centre. Check their website for the most current location and exhibit information before visiting.

The OSC is built around interactive, hands-on science exhibits spanning topics from space exploration to human anatomy to electricity. Unlike museums where kids read plaques and look at displays behind glass, nearly everything here is designed to be touched, pressed, cranked, or experimented with. This approach works across a wide age range — a 4-year-old spinning a gyroscope gets something different from the experience than a 14-year-old reading about angular momentum, but both are engaged.

Live science demonstrations run throughout the day and are not to be missed. Staff perform experiments with liquid nitrogen, Van de Graaff generators, and chemical reactions that produce fire and color changes. These 15-to-20-minute shows draw crowds, so arrive a few minutes early for good seats.

The KidSpark area is designed for children under 8 and features water tables, building zones, sand play, and simple machines. It's a contained area where toddlers and preschoolers can explore without being overwhelmed by the larger exhibit halls.

The IMAX theatre shows science-oriented films on a massive screen. Tickets are separate from general admission and shows can sell out on weekends, so book ahead if this is a priority.

Food options inside include a cafeteria-style restaurant with kid-friendly meals — burgers, pizza, sandwiches — at reasonable prices for an attraction. There's also space to eat packed lunches.

The centre is fully accessible with elevators between floors, wide hallways, and accessible washrooms. Strollers are welcome throughout. Nursing rooms are available. Plan for at least 3 hours — most families find that 4 hours passes quickly with all there is to see and do.

The on-site cafeteria has kid-friendly meals at reasonable prices. If visiting the Harbourfront location, the Queens Quay area has numerous restaurants, cafes, and the Harbourfront Centre itself has food vendors.

Why Kids Love It

The hands-on exhibits let kids touch everything — they can create their own lightning bolts in the electricity hall, launch rockets in the space area, and build structures that get tested by simulated earthquakes. The live science demonstrations with fire, liquid nitrogen, and explosions consistently blow kids' minds. The KidSpark area gives preschoolers their own space to experiment with water, sand, and building.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Check the daily demo schedule when you arrive and plan your route around the live shows
  • Hit KidSpark first with preschoolers — it gets crowded after 11am
  • IMAX tickets sell out on weekends — book online when you buy admission
  • The electricity hall's hair-raising Van de Graaff generator is a must-do photo op
  • Check the OSC website for current location details — the centre relocated from Don Mills

What to Bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes — it's a big space
  • Water bottles (refill stations available)
  • A light jacket — some exhibit halls run cool
  • Camera for the live science demo reactions
