About

James Gardens is a public terraced garden at 99 Edenbridge Drive in Etobicoke, set on a hillside overlooking the Humber River valley. It's a quieter, less-visited alternative to Edwards Gardens, offering a peaceful walk through flower gardens, stone pathways, and mature trees.

The garden is laid out on terraced slopes, with stone stairs and winding paths connecting different levels. A gazebo near the top provides a resting spot with views over the gardens. The paths lead down toward the Humber River, where you can connect to the Humber River trail system for a longer walk.

For families, the appeal is the natural setting and the sense of exploration. Kids enjoy the stone steps and the feeling of going up and down different levels. The flower beds are at their best in late spring and summer, with perennials, roses, and seasonal plantings. Fall brings beautiful foliage colours with the river valley as a backdrop.

The garden is smaller than Edwards Gardens — you can see everything in about an hour. The terraced layout means there are stairs and slopes, which makes it less stroller-friendly than flat gardens. A lightweight stroller can manage the main paths, but the stone stairs will require carrying.

There are no food vendors, washrooms, or facilities on-site. Bring everything you need. Parking is available in a small lot off Edenbridge Drive and is rarely full.

James Gardens connects to the larger Humber River trail network. Families who enjoy walking can continue south along the river toward Lambton Park or north toward the Humber Marshes. The garden is open dawn to dusk year-round.

Why Kids Love It

The terraced gardens along the Humber River valley feel like exploring a hidden hillside. Kids love the stone steps, the gazebo, and watching the river below. The paths wind through flower beds and under trees, creating a sense of discovery around each turn.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • The stone stairways between garden levels are the most fun part for kids
  • Continue walking south along the Humber River trail for a longer nature outing
  • Visit in late May or June for peak flower blooms
  • The gazebo is a nice spot for a picnic break with a view
  • Not ideal for heavy strollers — the terraced layout has stairs

What to Bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes (uneven stone paths)
  • Snacks and water — no facilities on-site
  • Camera for garden and river valley photos
  • Bug spray in summer
  • A carrier instead of a stroller for babies (stairs make strollers difficult)
