About
The Indo-Malaya Pavilion at the Toronto Zoo transports families into the ecosystems of Southeast Asia without leaving Scarborough. This indoor pavilion is one of the zoo's original buildings and houses an impressive collection of animals from the Indian subcontinent and the Malay Archipelago.
The orangutans are the undeniable stars. Their spacious indoor habitat includes climbing structures and ropes, and these intelligent primates put on a natural show that captivates kids far longer than most zoo exhibits. Watching an orangutan problem-solve or play with enrichment items is genuinely educational in a way that feels effortless.
The viewing glass is positioned well for children of all heights.
The Sumatran tiger exhibit is another major draw. Tigers are always a hit with kids, and the enclosure design allows for close viewing through heavy glass panels. Morning visits tend to catch the tigers at their most active, pacing and exploring their space.
Beyond the headliners, the pavilion features Malayan tapirs, various tropical birds, Indian rhinoceros viewing areas, and smaller reptile and amphibian exhibits. The building has a warm, tropical climate inside, which makes it another excellent option for winter zoo visits. The winding path through the pavilion is fully stroller-accessible.
The Indo-Malaya section connects to outdoor exhibits that open seasonally, including additional tiger viewing areas and the Asian elephant habitat (when elephants are on grounds). In winter, the indoor pavilion becomes the main attraction, and it delivers enough to justify a visit on its own.
Allow 30-45 minutes for a thorough walkthrough of this pavilion. It pairs naturally with the nearby African Rainforest Pavilion and the Australasia section for a tour of the zoo's indoor tropical exhibits, which is the ideal winter strategy for families with young children.

Why Kids Love It
The orangutans are incredibly expressive and kids can watch them play, swing, and interact with each other for extended stretches. The Sumatran tiger exhibit is dramatic and thrilling. Smaller animals like the Malayan tapir look so unusual that kids are genuinely surprised they're real.
