About

Hanlan's Point Beach is on the western end of the Toronto Islands, known for its wide sandy shore, views of the city skyline, and a well-known clothing-optional section. For families, it's important to know the layout: the main beach area is a regular public beach with lifeguards, while the clothing-optional area is at the far eastern end. The two sections are separated by a good distance, and signage marks where the clothing-optional area begins.

Families who are comfortable with the beach layout will find the main section of Hanlan's Point to be one of the best beaches on the islands. It's less crowded than Centre Island Beach because most families head to Centreville instead. The sand is wide and clean, the water is calm and shallow near shore, and the views looking east toward the CN Tower are stunning.

Getting here requires taking the Hanlan's Point ferry from Jack Layton Ferry Terminal. The ferry is usually less crowded than the Centre Island one, which is a plus. The ride takes about 15 minutes. From the dock, it's a short walk to the beach.

There are very few amenities. No food vendors, no playground, and washroom facilities are basic. Bring everything you need — water, food, sunscreen, shade. The beach is more of a raw, natural beach experience than the developed park setup at Centre Island.

This beach is best for families with older kids (10+) who are comfortable with a less structured environment. The walk from the ferry is manageable but not ideal for families with very young children and heavy gear. Strollers work on the paths but not on the sand.

Lifeguards are on duty during summer season. Check water quality postings before swimming.

Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

Weekday mornings for a quiet beach experience. Be aware of the clothing-optional section.

Wait Times

Ferry wait 10-30 minutes. No wait at the beach.

Nearby Food

Essentially none at Hanlan's Point. Centreville on Centre Island has snack bars (20-30 minute walk or bike). Best to eat before boarding the ferry or pack a full cooler.

Why Kids Love It

The wide sandy beach feels like a hidden getaway since fewer families visit Hanlan's compared to Centre Island. Older kids love the sense of having a more 'wild' beach experience. The views of the city across the harbour are spectacular.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Stick to the western/main section of the beach — the clothing-optional area is at the eastern end, clearly marked
  • Take the Hanlan's Point ferry, not Centre Island — it drops you closer
  • Pack everything you need — no food vendors or shops at the beach
  • The beach is less crowded than Centre Island, especially on weekdays
  • Check water quality postings before swimming

What to Bring

  • Full picnic and water — no food service
  • Sun shelter or beach umbrella — no shade
  • Sunscreen and hats
  • Sand toys if bringing older kids who still enjoy them
