About
Go Tours Canada runs walking tours of Toronto's Distillery District, a pedestrian-only neighborhood of beautifully restored Victorian industrial buildings. The 13-acre district was once the Gooderham and Worts Distillery, and the heritage architecture is genuinely stunning.
The guided tours last about an hour and cover the history of the distillery, the architecture, and the neighborhood's transformation into an arts and culture hub. For kids, the guide's stories about how whisky was made and the area's connection to the Underground Railroad add real substance beyond just walking around.
What makes this work for families is that the Distillery District itself is car-free. Kids can run ahead on the cobblestones without parents worrying about traffic. There are large-scale public art sculptures throughout that kids enjoy finding and climbing around (where allowed). The galleries and shops have interesting window displays even if you don't go inside.
The real family highlight is December, when the Toronto Christmas Market takes over the district. It's one of the best holiday markets in North America, with vendors, light installations, live performances, and enough hot chocolate to fuel an army of kids. It does get extremely crowded on weekends, so go on a weekday evening if possible.
Outside of the Christmas Market, the district is pleasantly uncrowded on weekday mornings. There are several restaurants and cafes on-site, including SOMA Chocolatemaker where kids can watch chocolate being made through the window.
