About

Inokashira Park Zoo sits within the leafy, beloved Inokashira Park in Kichijoji — one of Tokyo's most popular green spaces for families. Split into two sections across the park, the zoo is home to Japanese animals like raccoon dogs (tanuki), deer, monkeys, owls, and an elephant named Hanako who lived here for decades and became an icon. The highlight for kids is a walk-through squirrel cage where tiny flying squirrels dart around freely overhead.

A small aquarium section houses Japanese freshwater fish. The zoo is intentionally small and manageable, making it ideal for families with very young children who would find a larger zoo overwhelming. Admission is extraordinarily affordable — one of the best bargains in Tokyo.

The real magic, however, comes from the surrounding Inokashira Park. After the zoo, families can rent paddle boats in the shape of swans on the park's central pond, stroll cherry-blossom-lined paths in spring, and browse craft stalls and street performers. The Kichijoji neighborhood surrounding the park is lined with trendy cafes, bakeries, and child-friendly restaurants.

A full morning at the zoo followed by lunch in Kichijoji is a quintessential Tokyo family day out.
