Enoshima Aquarium

Enoshima Aquarium, officially called Shonan Hirakata Aquarium (Enosui), sits right on the Shonan coastline facing Sagami Bay south of Tokyo. It's one of the most scenically located aquariums in Japan — an outdoor dolphin stadium overlooks the actual ocean, giving shows a dramatic backdrop that no indoor aquarium can match. The dolphin and fur seal performances are the centerpiece, with trainers and animals working in close harmony in a salt-air environment that feels more like watching wildlife than a performance.

Inside, a massive Sagami Bay tank recreates the local marine ecosystem with hammerhead sharks, rays, and schools of fish. Penguins live in an open outdoor habitat where kids can watch them shuffle along rocky paths and dive into clear water. A jellyfish exhibit and touch tanks for rays and small sharks add tactile excitement.

The aquarium draws a decidedly different crowd than Tokyo's urban aquariums — beachgoers, day-trippers from the city, and families combining with nearby Enoshima Island. It's best reached by the Enoshima Electric Railway from Kamakura or Odakyu Line from Shinjuku. The combination of aquarium, ocean views, and island exploring makes for one of the best full-day family excursions from Tokyo.
