Kelley Park

Kelley Park is one of San José's largest and most multi-faceted public parks, stretching across 175 acres on the east side of the city. For families, it's practically a full day destination on its own — the park encompasses Happy Hollow Park and Zoo, the Japanese Friendship Garden, a historic village living history museum, and expansive green spaces for picnics and free play.

The park itself is free to enter, with admission only charged for Happy Hollow Zoo (worth every penny for families with young children). The Japanese Friendship Garden within the park is a serene, beautifully maintained traditional garden with a koi pond and traditional architecture — a peaceful counterpoint to the more energetic zoo visit. Kids who aren't usually interested in gardens find themselves drawn to the koi fish and the tranquil atmosphere.

At 175 acres, Kelley Park rewards visitors who bring bikes or scooters to cover the grounds without exhaustion. The wide paved paths are stroller-friendly, and there are numerous picnic tables and shaded areas throughout. Weekday visits offer a quieter, more relaxed experience, while weekends bring local families and more activity near the zoo entrance.

It's one of the best free outdoor destinations in San José for families with children ages 1-12.
