Guadalupe Gardens Heritage Rose Garden

The Guadalupe Gardens Heritage Rose Garden is a free public botanical attraction within the Guadalupe River Park greenway in San Jose, California. Containing more than 180 varieties of heritage, modern, and miniature roses, it's one of the largest and most diverse public rose collections in the Bay Area — and one of the least-known free family destinations in Silicon Valley.

The garden is best visited in spring, typically April through May, when the majority of rose varieties are in simultaneous bloom. The effect is spectacular — walking through row after row of flowering roses in dozens of colors, from deep crimson heritage varieties to pale pink miniatures, with the fragrance drifting through the entire garden. Early morning visits capture the dew on petals and the softest light for photographs.

For families, the rose garden works well as a gentle, beautiful outing that requires no admission and no planning. Stroller-friendly paths make it accessible with very young children. Kids can be given a simple mission — count how many different colors they can find, or identify the smallest and largest rose in bloom — which turns a garden walk into an engaging activity.

The garden connects to the Guadalupe River Trail, making it easy to extend the outing with a riverside walk or combine with nearby San Jose History Park for a longer free family afternoon.
