Zoo of the stars

Zoo of the Stars (Zoo delle Stelle) is a smaller, more intimate zoo located in Fossignano, roughly 60 kilometers south of Rome near Latina. For families with young children — particularly toddlers and preschoolers — the smaller scale is actually an advantage. At a large zoo like Bioparco, young kids can get overwhelmed by the size and crowds; at Zoo of the Stars, the pace is gentler and animal encounters feel more personal.

The zoo is set on farm-like grounds and features a variety of animals accessible to young visitors. The relaxed atmosphere, with far smaller crowds than Rome's main zoo, makes it genuinely enjoyable for the under-5 set. Kids who have been spending their Rome trip navigating ancient ruins and museums will appreciate a morning of uncomplicated animal watching.

The main limitation to plan around: Zoo of the Stars is open on weekends only (Saturday and Sunday, 10:30 AM to 6:00 PM) and there are no on-site food options, so bring a packed lunch. It's also closed Monday through Friday. The admission price is reasonable — a family of four should budget around USD 40-60 — making it one of the more affordable family day trips from Rome.
