About
Rettilario is the reptile pavilion inside Bioparco di Roma, Rome's main zoo located in the Villa Borghese gardens. As a standalone attraction it may not put it on your Rome itinerary, but as part of a Bioparco zoo day, it's often the section that children talk about longest.
The collection covers the full range of reptile diversity: large snakes, various lizard species, crocodilians, and the undisputed star of the show — the Komodo dragon. For children who have been primed on dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures, seeing a living Komodo dragon in person has an impact that no museum exhibit can quite replicate. The animals are displayed in well-designed enclosures that allow close viewing through glass.
Rettilario is entirely indoor, which makes it a useful stop during the hottest part of a summer visit or if there's a light rain. It's naturally included in the Bioparco admission price, so there's no extra cost. Best suited for kids 5 and up who won't be frightened by the animals on display.
Younger toddlers may find the darker interior unsettling, but most school-age children find it genuinely thrilling.
