About

The Serre Tropicale (Tropical Greenhouse) is the Madagascar biozone inside the Parc Zoologique de Paris — a massive enclosed habitat that recreates a genuine tropical forest environment. It's one of the signature experiences of the zoo, and for good reason: the scale and immersiveness are unlike anything in a standard zoo.

Inside, visitors walk through dense tropical vegetation while lemurs, giant tortoises, colorful birds and reptiles move around them with a degree of freedom unusual for a zoo setting. The greenhouse maintains tropical temperature and humidity year-round, which means it's one of the rare zoo experiences that's actually better in winter — the warm, wet air makes a November visit feel like Madagascar rather than Paris.

The Parc Zoologique de Paris in the Bois de Vincennes underwent a major EUR 135 million renovation completed in 2014. The greenhouse was the centerpiece of that renovation. The five biozones (Patagonia, Sahel-Sudan, Europe, Amazon, Madagascar) all aim for this level of environmental immersion, but the Madagascar zone is generally considered the most spectacular.

The full zoo visit takes 3 to 4 hours. The greenhouse is well worth the full zoo admission price on its own, but paired with the sea lions, the Sahel-Sudan animals (giraffe, rhinoceros) and the rest of the biozones, it's an excellent family day. Changing facilities and a restaurant are available near the main entrance.

Why Kids Love It

The Tropical Greenhouse at the Parc Zoologique de Paris is one of the most immersive animal experiences in Europe — a massive enclosed biome where lemurs, giant tortoises, tropical birds and reptiles live in a genuine jungle environment. Kids walk through the vegetation and get closer to the animals than they would in a standard zoo enclosure. The humidity, the sounds, the smells — it's genuinely transporting.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • The greenhouse is warmest and most magical in autumn and winter — paradoxically a great cold-weather day activity because of the tropical heat inside
  • Allocate at least 30–45 minutes for the greenhouse alone — it's easy to spend longer watching the lemurs

What to Bring

  • Light layers you can remove — the greenhouse is warm and humid
  • Camera for the lemur encounters
  • Water bottle
