About

The Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris is one of the oldest natural history institutions in the world, and its main galleries within the Jardin des Plantes remain a must-visit for families. The complex includes several distinct galleries, each worth exploring.

The Grande Galerie de l'Évolution is the crown jewel. A massive 19th-century iron-and-glass hall houses a dramatic procession of taxidermied animals — elephants, giraffes, zebras — all marching in formation across the main floor. A suspended blue whale model hangs overhead, and the lighting shifts to simulate day and night cycles.

Kids stand mesmerized. The Galerie des Enfants on the lower level offers hands-on exhibits designed for ages 6-12, covering biodiversity and ecosystems with interactive stations.

Across the grounds, the Galerie de Paléontologie et d'Anatomie Comparée holds row after row of dinosaur fossils, whale skeletons, and comparative anatomy specimens. It's less polished than the Evolution gallery but arguably even more impressive — the sheer density of bones and fossils is staggering.

The Jardin des Plantes itself is free to enter and offers wide paths, a hedge maze (the Labyrinthe), greenhouses, and a small zoo (the Ménagerie, separate ticket). You can easily spend a full day here bouncing between indoor galleries and outdoor exploration. The Latin Quarter borders the garden to the west, putting some of Paris's best casual dining — including the legendary market street Rue Mouffetard — within a 5-minute walk.

The Grande Galerie de l'Évolution is the showstopper — a grand parade of taxidermied animals marches through a soaring 19th-century hall, with a life-size blue whale hanging from the ceiling. The dinosaur fossils in the paleontology gallery make every kid's jaw drop, and the outdoor Jardin des Plantes offers room to run between indoor exhibits.
