About
La Ménagerie is one of the oldest zoos in the world, founded in 1794 within the grounds of the Jardin des Plantes, and it offers a genuinely different experience from modern large-format zoos. The compact grounds — just under nine acres — mean families cover the entire collection in a manageable two to three hours without exhausting young children. The animal collection prioritizes rare and endangered species: red pandas, snow leopards, Przewalski's horses, Barbary macaques, and a rotating cast of reptiles and birds draw lingering attention.
The vivarium is a highlight, housing a large collection of snakes, lizards, and amphibians that school-age children find fascinating. The orangutan enclosure is one of the most popular stops, and feeding demonstrations run on a rotating schedule posted at the entrance. Because the zoo is set within a formal botanical garden, the grounds are beautiful even between animal areas — manicured paths, old trees, and historic pavilions create an atmosphere very different from modern zoological parks.
The layout is flat and fully stroller-accessible. A small on-site cafe serves sandwiches and drinks. The zoo connects directly with the broader Jardin des Plantes complex, making it easy to combine with the Grande Galerie de l'Évolution or the children's gallery for a full day of natural history.
