About
Bois de Vincennes is the larger of Paris's two great forest parks, stretching across nearly 1,000 hectares in the southeastern corner of the city and extending into the Val-de-Marne department. For families, it represents one of the great free outdoor destinations in all of France — a genuine woodland with lakes, meadows, formal gardens, and historic buildings that reward repeated exploration.
The park anchors several of Paris's best family attractions. The Parc Zoologique de Paris — completely rebuilt and reopened in 2014 — is one of Europe's finest zoos, featuring immersive biozones that put animals in naturalistic habitats rather than cages. The medieval Château de Vincennes on the park's northern edge is a genuine fortress with keep and fortified walls that delights children interested in castles and history.
The Parc Floral hosts concerts, exhibitions, and seasonal events throughout the year.
Without spending anything on paid attractions, the forest itself delivers enormous value. Rowing boats on Lac Daumesnil, cycling on the extensive path network, picnics on the lawns around the smaller Lake Saint-Mandé, and simply walking through the woodland are all free. The park absorbs crowds far better than central Paris gardens because of its sheer scale — even on the busiest summer weekends, it is possible to find quiet corners.
Accessible via metro line 1 at Château de Vincennes and RER A at Vincennes, the park is one of the easiest major forest parks to reach from central Paris without a car.
