About

The Watersports Pavilion is a rental facility on Parc Jean-Drapeau's island, offering kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, pedal boats, and other watercraft for use in the calm basin of the St. Lawrence River. The location along Circuit Gilles Villeneuve puts you on the water with views of the Biosphere, downtown Montreal, and the Jacques Cartier Bridge.

The protected waters around Ile Sainte-Helene and Ile Notre-Dame are ideal for family paddling. The basin doesn't have the strong currents of the main river channel, so it's much safer for beginners and younger paddlers. That said, kids need to be able to hold a paddle and follow basic instructions — this isn't suitable for toddlers or very young children.

Kayaks come in singles and doubles, making tandem paddling with a parent possible for kids who aren't ready to go solo. Paddleboards require decent balance and are better for teens and confident older kids. Pedal boats offer a more relaxed option if your family isn't into active paddling.

Life jackets are provided with all rentals. The staff gives a basic safety briefing before launching. Equipment is generally in good condition, though the 4.0 Google rating suggests some room for improvement in service quality.

The pavilion operates seasonally (roughly June through September, weather dependent). Jean-Drapeau is accessible by car or metro (Jean-Drapeau station). Combine a paddle session with exploring the rest of the park — Biosphere, Stewart Museum, beaches, or just a picnic on the green space.

Sunscreen, water, and a hat are essential — there's minimal shade on the water.

Why Kids Love It

Paddling on the St. Lawrence with the Montreal skyline as a backdrop is a completely different perspective of the city. Older kids who can handle a paddle love the independence of steering their own kayak or standing on a paddleboard. The calm basin waters around Jean-Drapeau make it safe for beginners.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Double kayaks let a parent paddle with a younger child who can't manage solo
  • Go in the morning when water is calmest and the sun isn't at its peak
  • Combine with a Biosphere visit or park picnic for a full day on Jean-Drapeau

What to Bring

  • Sunscreen and a hat (zero shade on the water)
