Parc-nature du Cap-Saint-Jacques

Parc-nature du Cap-Saint-Jacques is Montreal's largest nature park, and its ecological farm is one of the best places to introduce young kids to farm animals without leaving the island. Located in Pierrefonds on the western tip of Montreal, the park combines a working organic farm with forests, trails, and lakeside beaches.

The ecological farm is the star attraction for families with young children. Kids can see and sometimes pet goats, sheep, chickens, pigs, and rabbits. The farm operates as a real organic operation, so the animals aren't just for show. Staff are knowledgeable and happy to answer questions about how the farm works.

Beyond the farm, the nature park covers over 300 hectares of forest, wetlands, and shoreline. The trails are well-marked and range from easy stroller-friendly paths near the entrance to more rugged hiking deeper in. In summer, there's a sandy beach on Lac des Deux Montagnes where families swim and picnic.

The farm's hours are limited, especially on weekdays when it's open only from noon to 4 PM. Weekend hours extend to 8 PM in summer, giving you more flexibility. School groups visit frequently in spring and fall, so weekday mornings can be busy with field trips.

Getting here requires a car since it's at the far west end of the island, about 35 minutes from downtown. The drive is worth it for a full day outdoors. The park also offers sugar shack visits in late winter, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, making it a four-season destination.
