About
Montreal en Histoires runs Cite Memoire, a free outdoor multimedia experience that projects massive video tableaux onto buildings, walls, and surfaces throughout Old Montreal. It's part walking tour, part light show, and it turns the historic quarter into an open-air theater after dark.
The experience works through a free app that you download before your visit. As you walk through Old Montreal, the app uses your GPS location to trigger audio stories and direct you to projection points. When you arrive at a designated spot, you see a film projected onto the side of a building — sometimes 30 feet tall — depicting historical scenes from Montreal's 375-year history.
There are over 20 projection points scattered across Old Montreal, and you don't need to see them all in one visit. Most families cover 8-10 in about 90 minutes of walking. The projections run from dusk to around 11 PM during summer months, with a reduced schedule in fall and winter.
For kids, this works best from about age 8 and up. Younger children may not have the patience for the walking or the attention span for historical narratives. But for tweens and teens who normally tune out at museums, the massive scale of the projections and the tech-forward approach tends to hold their interest.
The walking route covers cobblestone streets in Old Montreal, which means it's not great for strollers. Wear comfortable shoes, and bring warm layers if you're visiting in the shoulder season since you'll be standing outside watching projections.
This is one of Montreal's true hidden gems for families — it's completely free, genuinely unique, and gives you a reason to explore Old Montreal after the shops close.

Why Kids Love It
Giant light projections on the sides of old buildings tell stories about Montreal's past. Kids feel like they've walked into a movie — the characters appear right on the stone walls of Old Montreal. The app turns the walk into a treasure hunt as you seek out each projection point.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Download the app and charge your phone fully before heading out — the GPS and audio drain battery fast

- Bring portable phone chargers and headphones so each family member can hear the audio clearly
What to Bring
- Fully charged phone with the Montreal en Histoires app downloaded
