About
Gardens of Light is a seasonal evening event at the Montreal Botanical Garden, running from September through October each year. The Chinese and Japanese Gardens are transformed with hundreds of illuminated lanterns, light installations, and projected art, creating an after-dark experience that draws thousands of families.
The event starts at dusk, and the effect is best when you arrive right as the sun is going down. You watch the gardens shift from daylight to a completely different world as the lights come on. The Chinese Garden's lanterns reflecting off the lake are the centerpiece, with enormous silk lanterns shaped like animals, mythical creatures, and flowers.
Kids of all ages respond to the spectacle. Toddlers are wide-eyed and point at everything. Elementary-age kids want to find every hidden light display along the paths. Tweens and teens appreciate the artistic side, especially the interactive installations that have been added in recent years.
The paths are the same paved routes as daytime visits, so strollers work fine. However, the dark paths can be tricky for very young walkers, and the event can get crowded on weekend evenings, making it harder to keep track of multiple kids.
Dress warmly. September and October evenings in Montreal get cold, and you'll be outdoors for 1.5 to 2 hours. Layers are essential. There are food vendors at the event, though lines can be long and prices are elevated.
The event's 3.5 Google rating is lower than the garden's usual score, likely because weekend crowding frustrates visitors. Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening for a much more enjoyable experience.
