About

Ecomuseum Zoo is the only outdoor zoo on the island of Montreal, and it takes a completely different approach from traditional zoos. Every single one of the 115+ animal species here is native to the St. Lawrence Valley — no giraffes or elephants, but wolves, black bears, caribou, lynx, river otters, and dozens of bird species that actually belong in this ecosystem.

The whole place feels more like a nature walk than a zoo. Pathways wind through forested areas where enclosures blend into the landscape. Kids who are used to flashy zoo exhibits might take a minute to adjust, but once they spot a great horned owl perched three feet away or watch arctic foxes chase each other, they're hooked.

The otter habitat is the undisputed star attraction. These animals never stop moving, and kids will press their faces against the viewing glass for 20 minutes straight. The birds of prey area is another highlight, especially if you catch a demonstration.

For little ones, the pace here is perfect. The zoo is compact enough that toddler legs can handle it without a meltdown. Paths are mostly gravel and packed earth, so umbrella strollers work but jogging strollers handle the terrain better.

There's a small snack bar on-site, but options are limited. Most families pack a lunch and eat at the picnic tables near the entrance. Restrooms are basic but clean, with one changing station available.

The zoo is about 30 minutes west of downtown Montreal in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. The drive is easy, and the neighboring village has ice cream shops and cafes if you want to extend the outing.

Why Kids Love It

Kids get to see real wolves, bears, and lynx up close in natural habitats instead of cages. The otter area is a crowd favorite — they're constantly swimming and playing. The bird of prey demonstrations make kids gasp every time.
