About
St James's Park is the oldest and arguably most beautiful of London's eight Royal Parks, and the playground nestled within its grounds is an often-overlooked gem for visiting families. Located off Birdcage Walk, the playground offers a range of well-maintained equipment for young children — swings, slides, and climbing structures in a green, shaded setting that feels very different from the exposed urban playgrounds you find elsewhere in the city. The park's real magic for families, though, extends far beyond the playground itself.
The ornamental lake is home to a resident colony of pelicans, which have lived in the park since the 1660s when they were gifted by the Russian Ambassador. Children are fascinated by them — they're large, dignified, and surprisingly unfazed by people. Duck Island in the middle of the lake is a wildfowl sanctuary, and the variety of birds visible from the bridge is remarkable for central London.
Buckingham Palace is visible at the western end of the park, the Horse Guards Parade at the eastern end, and the overall atmosphere is unmistakably London in a way few other parks can match. Toilets with baby-changing facilities are available in the park. The Blue Bridge Café is on site for hot drinks and food, though prices reflect the central location — a packed picnic on the grass is a more economical and honestly more pleasant option.
The park is served by multiple tube stations including St James's Park on the District and Circle lines.

The Blue Bridge Café in the park is convenient but pricey. Victoria station and its surrounding streets (a 10-minute walk) have a much wider range of affordable food options.
Why Kids Love It
Feeding the pelicans in St James's Park is one of those London experiences kids talk about for months afterward — the birds are enormous and genuinely bold around visitors. The playground itself is solid, but the park's combination of lake, ducks, and royal scenery turns a simple outing into something that feels almost magical for young children. It's one of the only places in London where a child can legitimately say they saw pelicans and Buckingham Palace in the same afternoon.
Pro Tips from Parents
- The pelicans are fed every day at 2:30pm near Duck Island — position yourself early for the best view.
- Weekday mornings are significantly quieter than weekends, when tourist crowds can make the playground feel very busy.
- Combine with Buckingham Palace's Changing of the Guard if timing works — it's free to watch and kids often love the spectacle.
What to Bring
- A packed picnic — the park's café prices are high
- Bread alternatives for feeding ducks (oats or defrosted peas are kinder to birds)
- A camera — the park views are genuinely stunning and kids often want photos near the pelicans
