About
Kew's Children's Garden, opened in 2019, is an award-winning outdoor space dedicated entirely to helping children connect with the natural world through play, discovery, and sensory experience. Set within the wider Royal Botanic Gardens, the garden occupies a generous plot and has been designed to give children genuine freedom to explore at their own pace.
The space is organised around the four elements — fire, water, earth, and air — each with its own themed zone offering different activities and sensory experiences. The water zone features channels where children can redirect the flow using sluice gates, a perennial favourite. The earth zone includes digging patches and planting activities that change with the seasons.
Climbing structures made from natural materials encourage physical play woven together with nature themes.
The garden is especially well-suited to children between around two and ten years old. Younger children are captivated by the water play and the textures and colours throughout, while primary school-age children engage more deeply with the science of plant growth demonstrated through the growing areas.
Parents and carers are welcomed into the space alongside children, and staff are knowledgeable and approachable. The garden is included within the standard Kew Gardens admission price, making it excellent value as part of a wider Kew visit. Paths within the Children's Garden are stroller-accessible, and baby-changing facilities are available nearby.

Why Kids Love It
Kew's Children's Garden is hands-on in all the right ways — kids can dig, splash in water channels, climb over nature sculptures, and discover how plants actually grow rather than just looking at them. It feels like a brilliant outdoor classroom that never feels like school. Young children can easily spend hours here without getting bored.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Bring a change of clothes — the water zone is irresistible and children inevitably get thoroughly wet regardless of the weather.
- Visit the Children's Garden early in your Kew trip while children have maximum energy; save the Treetop Walkway and glasshouses for after.
- The growing areas change through the seasons — spring and summer offer the most vibrant plant displays and the most hands-on activities.
What to Bring
- Spare clothes and shoes for water play
- Sunscreen — the garden is largely open and exposed in summer
- Snacks for refuelling between activity zones
