About
Churchill War Rooms is one of London's most atmospheric and genuinely gripping historic sites, located beneath Westminster in the very underground complex where Winston Churchill and his War Cabinet made decisions that shaped the outcome of World War II. The rooms have been preserved exactly as they were when the lights were finally switched off in 1945 — typewriters still sit on desks, maps are pinned to walls, and the whole place carries a weight that is hard to describe until you are standing in it. For older kids, tweens, and teens with any interest in history, this is an experience that sticks.
The Churchill Museum embedded within the complex is interactive and well-designed, with a massive timeline and engaging multimedia exhibits that put his life in context. The audio guide is genuinely excellent and worth using — it is available in a junior version for younger visitors. The site is not stroller-friendly due to the underground layout and narrow corridors, so plan accordingly.
Admission is paid and on the pricier side for a London attraction, but the quality of the experience justifies it. Booking online in advance is strongly recommended — queues without a ticket can be significant, especially on weekends and during school holidays. Plan for at least two hours to do it justice.

Why Kids Love It
Walking through the actual underground bunker where Churchill directed World War II is genuinely thrilling for older kids and teens. The rooms are preserved exactly as they were in 1945, right down to the maps on the walls and the teacups on the desks. The audio guide brings the whole place to life in a way that feels more like a film set than a museum.
Pro Tips from Parents
- The junior audio guide is excellent — pick it up at the entrance so kids have their own narration rather than sharing yours.
- Arrive right when it opens to get the bunker experience without crowds pressing in behind you.
- Combine with a walk through St James's Park afterward to decompress — it is right next door.
What to Bring
