About
Praia do Ribeiro do Cavalo is widely considered one of the most beautiful and dramatic beaches in the greater Lisbon area, and arguably one of the finest hidden beaches in all of Portugal. Nestled below towering limestone cliffs on the Arrábida coast south of Lisbon, the beach features stunning turquoise waters, a natural rock arch, and a narrow crescent of golden sand that feels almost untouched. Access requires a steep, winding hike of about 15–20 minutes each way on rough terrain, which means the beach remains mercifully free from the crowds that overrun more accessible spots.
This hiking requirement also means the beach is not suitable for toddlers, infants, or anyone with mobility difficulties — and strollers are completely out of the question. Children aged 6 and up who are comfortable on uneven paths will find the hike an adventure in itself. Once at the beach, the clear, calm water is ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
There are absolutely no facilities — no toilets, no food, no shade structures — so bring everything you need. A family of four should pack generous amounts of water, snacks, sunscreen, and a first aid kit. Getting there requires a car, as the trailhead is not accessible by public transport.
The effort is absolutely worth it, and families who make the trip often describe it as one of the highlights of their entire Lisbon visit.
