About

The Jerónimos Monastery is one of the most visually striking buildings in Europe, and older kids consistently react with genuine awe when they first step into its two-story cloister. Built in the late 15th century to celebrate Vasco da Gama's sea voyages, the monastery is covered in intricate Manueline stone carvings — twisted ropes, armillary spheres, and sea creatures worked into every column and archway. It's genuinely fun to play I Spy with kids hunting for the different motifs.

For families, the cloister is the heart of the visit. Give kids at least 30 minutes to wander the covered walkways and look down into the central garden. The scale of the vaulted church nave is hard to prepare children for — it's one of those moments where they just stop and stare. The tomb of Vasco da Gama inside the church is a good hook for history-minded tweens.

Practical notes: the monastery is closed Mondays, so plan accordingly. Strollers are not a great fit given the uneven stone floors and crowd density. Buy tickets online before you go — the walk-up line on busy days can be 45 minutes or more. Children under 12 are free, and the first Sunday of every month is free for everyone.

Why Kids Love It

Kids are wowed by the monastery's dragon-scale stone carvings and impossibly tall arched cloisters that look straight out of a fantasy movie — older kids especially love spotting the rope-and-sphere Manueline stonework up close.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Enter via the side door on the west end to avoid the main queue — this is where online ticket holders line up.
  • The two-story cloister is the highlight; give kids time to count the different carved motifs on each column.
  • Combine with the nearby MAAT museum on the riverfront for a full morning.

What to Bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes — the cloister floor is uneven stone
  • Water bottle, no food inside
