Newfields

Newfields is one of Indianapolis's most ambitious cultural institutions — a comprehensive arts campus that combines the Indianapolis Museum of Art with 100 acres of curated outdoor grounds, a historic estate, and a year-round calendar of events that give families reason to return across seasons.

The museum itself holds an impressive permanent collection spanning 5,000 years of art history, with galleries arranged to be navigable with children without feeling endless. The scale is substantial but not overwhelming, and the mix of periods and styles offers something to engage curious eyes at every age.

The outdoor component — the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park — is where the campus distinguishes itself for families with younger children. One hundred acres of meadows, woodlands, lakeside trails, and large-scale contemporary art installations create a setting where experiencing art feels more like discovery than education.

The campus's seasonal programming is exceptional. Winterlights transforms the grounds into a massive immersive light installation from November through January, drawing significant crowds and selling out weeks in advance. The October Harvest event and summer programming round out a full-year calendar.

Membership is particularly good value at Newfields because many seasonal events require separate tickets that carry a premium. Members receive discounts or complimentary access to these events, which rapidly offsets the membership cost for active families.
