Indiana State Museum

The Indiana State Museum in White River State Park is one of Indianapolis's premier rainy-day destinations for families — a large, beautifully designed facility that covers Indiana's natural and cultural history across multiple engaging floors.

For kids, the standout is the natural sciences section, where full dinosaur skeletons, a woolly mammoth display, and prehistoric Indiana exhibits capture imaginations immediately. The scale of the fossils and the quality of the presentation put this well above typical regional museum standards. Older kids and teens engage with the broader history and pop culture sections, which cover everything from Indiana's Indigenous heritage to mid-century Americana.

The IMAX theater on-site is a significant draw in its own right. It screens both nature documentaries and select popular films, and the combination of museum admission plus an IMAX show makes for a genuinely full afternoon. Tickets for IMAX shows sell quickly on weekends and holiday breaks, so booking in advance is recommended.

The building itself is architecturally interesting — designed to evoke limestone and Indiana's geological identity — and easy to navigate with strollers and younger children thanks to wide corridors and elevator access throughout. The on-site café provides a reliable lunch option without requiring you to leave the building.

The museum is closed Monday and Tuesday, which catches visitors off guard. Wednesday through Sunday, 10 AM to 5 PM is the standard schedule. Indiana residents receive a discounted admission rate.
