About

The Indian Point Blagden Preserve is a Nature Conservancy property on the western shore of Mount Desert Island that harbors one of the most accessible harbor seal viewing opportunities in the Bar Harbor area. For families who want a genuine wildlife encounter without a boat tour price tag, this hidden gem is a superb option.

The preserve features about 1.5 miles of easy trails through spruce and mixed forest that lead to rocky shoreline points. At low tide, harbor seals haul out on the offshore rocks in impressive numbers — sometimes dozens at a time. With binoculars, the views are excellent. Without them, you can still see the seals, but the experience is dramatically better with optics.

The key to a successful seal-watching visit is timing. Low tide in the early morning is optimal — seals haul out to rest and warm up, and they're most concentrated and visible in that window. Approaching too close will spook them back into the water, so binoculars allow respectful observation from a comfortable distance for both the viewer and the seals.

The trail through the forest is pleasant in its own right — cool, shaded, and quiet, with the smell of spruce and salt that defines coastal Maine at its best. The preserve is free to visit and uncrowded compared to the main Acadia attractions, making it a wonderful alternative for families who want an off-the-beaten-path experience.
