About
Great Head is one of the most rewarding short hikes in Acadia National Park — a 1.6-mile loop that delivers dramatic ocean cliffs, sweeping views of Frenchman Bay, and a genuine sense of adventure without requiring an all-day commitment.
The trail begins at the east end of Sand Beach and climbs through spruce forest before breaking out onto the open granite headland that gives Great Head its name. From the summit, the views are extraordinary: the Atlantic stretches to the horizon, Sand Beach gleams far below, and Acadia's mountains rise behind you. Kids who reach the top feel a real sense of accomplishment.
The trail involves some scrambling over granite slabs near the headland, which most kids find thrilling rather than challenging. Watch footings on wet rocks, and supervise young children carefully near the cliff edges. The loop descends back to the beach through the woods, making for a varied and interesting circuit.
Parking at Sand Beach fills fast in summer — arrive by 8:30 or 9 AM to be safe. An Acadia National Park pass is required. If your family visits multiple national parks, the America the Beautiful annual pass pays for itself quickly.
Great Head pairs naturally with a morning at Sand Beach, making for a full half-day of swimming, hiking, and ocean exploration.
