About
Cadillac Mountain is the crown jewel of Acadia National Park and one of the most iconic family experiences in all of New England. At 1,530 feet, it's the highest point on the East Coast of the United States, and from October through early March, it's the first place in the country to receive sunlight each morning — a fact that makes the Cadillac Mountain sunrise one of the most sought-after outdoor experiences on the entire East Coast.
For families, the summit is accessible in multiple ways. The paved road to the top means you can drive directly to the summit with infants, toddlers, or anyone who can't hike. A short loop trail around the summit offers an easy walk on open granite with 360-degree views of Frenchman Bay, the Porcupine Islands, the Cranberry Isles, and Acadia's mountains — extraordinary in every direction.
The sunrise experience is in a category of its own. Watching the first light of day touch the summit while the Atlantic spreads out below you is profoundly beautiful, and children who experience it tend to remember it for the rest of their lives. Timed entry reservations for the October–June peak sunrise period sell out weeks in advance — book the moment your trip dates are confirmed.
Dress significantly warmer than you think necessary. The summit is consistently 10–15 degrees colder than Bar Harbor and can be extremely windy even on warm summer days. Hot coffee or cocoa in a thermos for a sunrise visit is highly recommended.
