About
The Bar Island Land Bridge is one of Bar Harbor's most memorable natural phenomena — a gravel bar that emerges from the ocean twice daily at low tide, connecting the mainland to Bar Island. For kids, the idea of walking across the ocean floor feels nothing short of magical, and the race against the rising tide adds a genuine sense of adventure.
The walk across the bar takes just a few minutes, but the experience lingers. Tide pools form along the edges, offering glimpses of periwinkles, crabs, and seaweed. Once on Bar Island itself, a short trail winds through the woods to an overlook with sweeping views of Frenchman Bay and the Bar Harbor waterfront — well worth the climb for older kids and tweens.
The key to a successful visit is timing. The bar is only passable for roughly 90 minutes on either side of low tide. Check a reliable Bar Harbor tide chart before heading out, and make sure your group has enough time to cross, explore, and return before the water rises. The tide waits for no one, and park rangers have had to rescue visitors who misjudged it.
This is not a stroller-friendly walk — the gravel bar is uneven and the island trail is wooded and rooty. But for kids old enough to walk a mile with confidence, it's one of the most unique free experiences in all of Acadia.
