About

Wegmans Wonderplace is the Smithsonian's answer to the age-old parenting challenge: how do you take a toddler to a museum without both of you melting down? Located inside the National Museum of American History on the National Mall, this dedicated children's exhibit is designed specifically for the under-6 set — and it shows in every detail.

Unlike the rest of the American History museum, which is full of fascinating but untouchable artifacts, Wonderplace is built for hands. Kids can play in a neighborhood-themed environment, engage with interactive elements scaled to their height, and experience the kind of discovery-driven learning that keeps 2- to 5-year-olds genuinely absorbed. Parents of multiple ages will appreciate that the space lets littler ones thrive while older siblings explore the surrounding exhibits.

The free admission is the obvious headline, but it's genuinely significant: a family of four pays $0 to spend a morning here. That said, planning is required. The Wonderplace is closed Monday and Tuesday, so check the schedule before you make the trip into DC. Timed entry passes may also be required — check americanhistory.si.edu well before your visit date.

For visiting families, the American History museum pairs nicely with a walk along the National Mall. The Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and the Mall's open lawns are all within reasonable strolling distance. Make a morning of Wonderplace, then picnic on the lawn before heading to whichever other Smithsonian catches your eye.

Metro access is excellent: Federal Triangle station (Blue/Orange/Silver lines) or Smithsonian station both put you within an easy walk. Driving and parking near the Mall is expensive and frustrating — Metro is strongly recommended for this particular destination.

Why Kids Love It

Wegmans Wonderplace inside the National Museum of American History is designed from the ground up for children under 6 — every element is scaled to tiny hands and short legs. Kids can 'cook' in a play kitchen area, explore a child-sized neighborhood, and engage with exhibits through touch and discovery rather than passive looking. Toddlers who would normally last 20 minutes at a traditional museum will stay engaged here for over an hour.

What Parents Say

There is stroller parking inside and a restroom with a changing table and kiddie- sized potty.
