About
The Yards Park sits along the Anacostia River in DC's Navy Yard neighborhood, and it's one of the best free spots in the city for families with young kids. The star attraction is the cascading water channel — a shallow, rock-lined waterway that flows downhill into a canal basin. Kids wade through it, climb the boulders, splash each other, and generally refuse to leave.
It runs from late May through September and there's no admission, no ticket, no line. You just show up.
The playground is modern and well-designed with climbing structures, a bridge feature, and equipment scaled for toddlers through about age 8. It sits on a rubberized surface, which is a plus for wobbly walkers. There's also a large open lawn perfect for picnics, frisbee, or just letting kids burn energy.
The park's boardwalk runs along the river and it's fully paved and flat — easy stroller pushing. You'll find benches throughout but limited shade, so bring sunscreen and hats on sunny days. There aren't dedicated changing rooms, but the restrooms at the nearby Yards retail area work in a pinch.
Parking is the one pain point. Street parking fills up fast, especially on summer weekends. Your best bet is the garage on 4th St SE (~$10-15) or just take Metro to Navy Yard-Ballpark station, which drops you a 5-minute walk from the park. If you're driving, aim to arrive before 10am on weekends.
Food-wise, the park itself doesn't have a concession stand, but The Yards retail strip is steps away. All-Purpose does great pizza ($14-18 range), and Ice Cream Jubilee is a must-stop after water play. Food trucks show up during summer events.
The park hosts free outdoor fitness classes, movie nights, and live music through the Capitol Riverfront BID's seasonal programming. It's worth checking their calendar before you go — catching a Friday evening concert while kids splash around is a solid DC evening. Off-season (October through April), the park is still worth a visit for the playground and riverfront walks, but the water features are off.

Plan Your Visit
Best Time to Visit
Weekday mornings for smaller crowds at the water features. Weekends get packed by 11am in summer. The canal basin water feature runs late May through September.
Wait Times
No wait — it's an open park. The water channel area can get crowded on hot summer weekends but there's no line to get in.
Nearby Food
The Yards development is right next door with spots like All-Purpose (solid pizza, ~$14-18), Agua 301 (Mexican, kids menu around $8), and Ice Cream Jubilee for post-splash treats (~$6/scoop). In summer, food trucks sometimes park along the boardwalk.
Why Kids Love It
The cascading water channel is the main draw — it's a shallow, sloped waterway kids can splash through, climb the rocks, and wade in during summer. Toddlers lose their minds over it. The modern playground has climbing structures with a cool bridge element, and the wide open lawn is great for running around or kicking a ball.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Bring towels and a change of clothes — kids WILL get soaked in the water channel, even if you say they won't
- The grassy hill near the bridge is the best spot to set up a blanket where you can watch kids at the water feature and the playground at the same time
- Navy Yard Metro station is a 5-minute walk and way easier than dealing with parking in this neighborhood
- Friday evenings in summer they often have live music and food trucks at the park — check Capitol Riverfront's event calendar
What to Bring
