About
The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is the largest aquarium in Virginia and one of the top family attractions in Virginia Beach. Spread across a sprawling campus on General Booth Boulevard, the facility houses over 12,000 animals representing more than 700 species, with a focus on the marine and freshwater habitats of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It's a destination that can easily fill a full day for families.
The aquarium is divided into two main buildings connected by a nature trail. The main building features massive tank exhibits including a 300,000-gallon Red Sea aquarium tunnel where sharks, sea turtles, and rays glide overhead. Touch tanks let kids get hands-on with horseshoe crabs, stingrays, and sea stars.
The Marsh Pavilion showcases the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem with live otters, harbor seals, and a walk-through aviary. A separate outdoor adventure area includes a nature trail through 10 acres of salt marsh.
Beyond the permanent exhibits, the aquarium runs seasonal boat tours for dolphin and whale watching, an IMAX theater, and rotating special exhibits. The on-site Brine restaurant offers kid-friendly meals with bay views. For families with young children, the Discovery Center provides a dedicated play and learning space sized for toddlers and preschoolers.
The campus is well-maintained with wide pathways that accommodate strollers and wheelchairs throughout. With its mix of indoor exhibits, outdoor trails, and live animal encounters, this is the kind of place where even screen-addicted tweens put their phones away.

Plan Your Visit
Best Time to Visit
Weekday mornings, especially Tuesday-Thursday. Summers are busiest — spring and fall offer shorter lines and milder weather for the outdoor trail.
Why Kids Love It
The shark tunnel alone is worth the trip — walking underneath a 300,000-gallon tank while sharks and sea turtles swim overhead is the kind of thing kids remember for years. The touch tanks where they can pet stingrays and hold horseshoe crabs turn every visit into a hands-on science lesson they actually enjoy.

- Buy tickets online in advance for a small discount and to skip the ticket line, especially during summer.
- Plan to eat lunch at the on-site Brine restaurant or pack a lunch to eat at the outdoor picnic areas near the nature trail.
