About

The Vancouver Maritime Museum sits in Vanier Park at the waterfront, a modest-sized museum focused on British Columbia's maritime history. The building is dominated by its centerpiece: the St. Roch, a restored 1928 RCMP Arctic patrol vessel that's one of only a handful of ships to have navigated the Northwest Passage.

Kids can board the St. Roch and explore the narrow quarters, galley, and wheelhouse. It gives them a tangible sense of what life was like on an Arctic expedition — the cramped sleeping berths and tiny kitchen are eye-opening for children used to modern comforts. This is the kind of hands-on history that works much better than reading about it.

The Children's Maritime Discovery Centre is the other family highlight. It's a dedicated play and learning area where kids can dress up in sailor uniforms, use real navigation instruments, build small model boats, and learn about marine ecosystems. It's well-designed for the 3-8 age range.

The rest of the museum covers BC maritime history through models, artifacts, and displays. These are more interesting for older children and adults — younger kids will spend most of their time on the ship and in the discovery centre.

The museum is small enough to see everything in 1-2 hours, which is actually a strength for families with younger children who have limited attention spans. It pairs well with the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre next door (combo tickets available) and time in Vanier Park.

There's no cafe inside the museum. Vanier Park is a beautiful picnic spot, or head to Cornwall Avenue in Kitsilano for restaurant options. The museum is fully stroller-accessible with elevators and ramps.
