The Dome

The Dome is an immersive projection experience housed in the same building as the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre in Vanier Park, Kitsilano. It uses the planetarium dome as a canvas for large-scale visual shows that are more art installation than traditional film.

The shows vary — some focus on nature and science, others are more abstract visual art experiences with synchronized music. The content rotates, so check their website for the current lineup before visiting. Some shows are more appropriate for younger viewers than others; the science-focused content tends to work better for kids.

The experience is seated, with the audience looking up at the domed ceiling while projections wrap around them in every direction. It's genuinely impressive technology and creates a sense of immersion that standard screens can't match. Shows typically run 45-60 minutes.

For families, this works best with older kids who can sit still for an extended visual experience. Children under 8 may find it too long or too abstract. Tweens and teens who are into art, music, or technology tend to enjoy it most.

Evening time slots offer the best effect since the dome is darker. The venue shares parking with Vanier Park, which is free in the evening but can be limited during daytime. Transit access via bus is also an option.

The Dome is a relatively new attraction in Vancouver and operates separately from the Space Centre with its own ticket pricing. It makes for a good pairing with dinner in Kitsilano — several restaurants are within walking distance along Cornwall Avenue.
