About

The Coaster is the iconic wooden roller coaster at Playland amusement park, located at Hastings Park in East Vancouver. Originally built in 1958 and refurbished several times since, it's one of the oldest operating wooden roller coasters in Canada and the signature ride at Vancouver's only amusement park.

The ride lasts about two minutes and reaches speeds of roughly 75 km/h. The wooden track structure gives it a rougher, more exciting feel than modern steel coasters — the creaking, rattling, and lateral movement make it genuinely thrilling without being extreme. The first drop is about 22 meters (72 feet), followed by a series of hills and curves through the wooden framework.

Height requirements apply — riders typically need to be at least 48 inches (122 cm) tall. This puts the practical minimum age around 6-7 for average-height kids. Kids under the height requirement cannot ride, even with an adult. There's no separate junior version of the coaster.

The Coaster operates as part of Playland, which runs during two main seasons: the Playland park season (roughly May through September) and the PNE Fair (two weeks in late August). During the PNE Fair, the park is busiest and wait times for The Coaster can stretch to 45+ minutes on weekend afternoons. Weekday visits during the fair see much shorter lines.

Playland admission covers access to the park grounds, but rides require either individual tickets or an unlimited ride wristband. The wristband is better value if you plan to ride more than 4-5 rides. The Coaster is included in the wristband — no extra charge.

The park has food stands, washrooms, and other family rides for younger kids who can't ride The Coaster yet. Playland is a classic summer outing for Vancouver families — it's not a major theme park like Disneyland, but it has genuine character and a local feel.

Why Kids Love It

The Coaster (also called the Wooden Roller Coaster) at Playland is a classic — the wooden tracks creak and rattle, making it feel faster and scarier than it actually is. It's been thrilling Vancouver kids since 1958 and remains the park's most iconic ride.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Go on a weekday during PNE Fair season to avoid 45+ minute lines
  • Buy ride wristbands online before you go — the gate price is higher
  • Ride The Coaster early in your visit when lines are shortest, then hit the smaller rides later

What to Bring

  • Secure pocket or fanny pack for phone and wallet — no loose items allowed on the ride
  • Sunscreen — most of the queue is outdoors without shade
