About

Stanley Park is a 1,000-acre urban park occupying the entire tip of the downtown Vancouver peninsula. It's consistently ranked among the top city parks in the world, and for families, it's the single best free attraction in Vancouver.

The seawall is the park's signature feature — a flat, paved path that loops 9 km around the park's perimeter with ocean, mountain, and city views the entire way. Families bike, walk, rollerblade, and push strollers along it. Bike rentals are available from shops on Denman Street at the park's entrance. The full loop takes about 1.5 hours by bike at a family pace.

Inside the park, forest trails wind through old-growth trees draped in moss. The most popular family trail is the relatively flat loop around Beaver Lake, where kids can spot turtles, herons, and sometimes beavers. Raccoons are common throughout the park — keep food secured and don't feed them.

Key family spots include the spray park and playground near Lumberman's Arch (open in summer), Second Beach Pool (a heated outdoor pool right on the beach), and the miniature railway that runs seasonally with themed rides including a holiday train in December.

The Vancouver Aquarium is inside Stanley Park and is a separate ticketed attraction. Third Beach and Second Beach are accessible for swimming and sand play in summer. The totem poles at Brockton Point are a must-see — they're one of the most visited attractions in BC.

Food options include the Prospect Point Bar & Grill (beautiful views, tourist prices), the Teahouse at Ferguson Point, and various concession stands during summer. For the best value, pack a picnic and eat at one of the many waterfront spots.

Parking inside the park costs money and fills up early on summer weekends. The best strategy is to arrive before 10 AM or take the bus from downtown. Once inside, you can easily spend a full day.
