About

The Cypress Eagle Coaster is a mountain coaster at Cypress Mountain in West Vancouver, about 30 minutes from downtown. It operates during the summer season (roughly June through September) as part of Cypress Mountain's summer activities program.

The coaster is a rail-guided toboggan-style ride where each car seats 1-2 riders and winds down the mountain through the forest on a steel track. Unlike a traditional roller coaster, riders control their own speed using a hand brake — pull it for a slower ride, release it for maximum speed (up to 40 km/h). This makes it adaptable: nervous younger kids can brake heavily while thrill-seeking teens can let it fly.

The track is about 1.7 km long with a vertical drop of approximately 279 meters. The ride takes 5-8 minutes depending on how much you brake. The views through the forest canopy and toward the ocean and Vancouver skyline are genuinely impressive, especially on clear days.

Height and age requirements apply. Kids under a certain height (typically 95 cm) cannot ride at all. Children between 95-115 cm can ride with an adult in the same car. Those over 115 cm can ride solo. Check the Cypress Mountain website for exact current requirements.

Cypress Mountain's summer programming extends beyond the coaster. The mountain offers hiking trails, disc golf, a scenic chairlift ride, and a playground area. Buying a combo pass that includes multiple activities gives you the best value and enough activities for a full morning or afternoon.

The drive from downtown Vancouver takes 25-30 minutes via the Trans-Canada Highway and Cypress Bowl Road. The road is steep and winding but well-maintained. Parking at the mountain is free. There's a lodge with a cafe, washrooms, and a small retail shop at the top.

Why Kids Love It

The Eagle Coaster is a mountain roller coaster that winds through the forest on Cypress Mountain at speeds up to 40 km/h. Riders control their own speed with a hand brake, which gives kids a sense of control while still delivering a genuine thrill ride through the trees.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Buy combo passes online before visiting for the best price and to skip ticket counter lines
  • Go on a clear day — the views of Vancouver, the ocean, and the mountains are half the experience
  • Ride once with brakes to learn the track, then ride again at full speed for the real thrill

What to Bring

  • Layers — the mountain is noticeably cooler than sea-level Vancouver
  • Sunglasses — the sun can be intense at elevation
  • Hiking shoes if you plan to explore the trails as well
