About

Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village sits right on Oak Creek in Sedona and it's one of the more surprising kid-friendly stops in town. Free to walk around, free parking, and built to look like a traditional Mexican village with stucco walls, tile roofs, and massive old sycamores shading the courtyards. Kids don't care about the art market angle — they just see archways to run through and fountains to stick their hands in.

The layout works well for families. Paths are paved and flat enough for strollers, though a couple of the gallery entrances have steps. There are about 50 shops and galleries spread across multiple courtyards connected by covered walkways.

Most of them are browse-at-your-own-pace, no pressure. A few galleries actively welcome kids — the Kuivato Glass Gallery does live glassblowing demos that genuinely hold a 6-year-old's attention, and Rowe Fine Art Gallery has bronze sculptures at kid eye level.

The real draw for families is the bronze foundry. Most weekdays you can watch artists pour molten metal into molds. It's loud, it's hot, and kids are mesmerized.

Free to watch. Behind the village there's easy access to Oak Creek — a flat dirt path leads down to the water where kids can wade in shallow spots during warmer months. Not a swimming hole, but good for rock-throwing and creek exploration.

Food options are right on-site. Oak Creek Brewery does burgers and pizza with a kids menu in the $8-$10 range. Rene at Tlaquepaque is a white-tablecloth spot but they don't bat an eye at families — high chairs available, crayons on request. If you just want coffee and a muffin, Creekside Coffee handles that.

Plan for 1. 5-3 hours depending on how much shopping you want to do. Kids under 5 will be happy with the fountains and creek for about an hour.

Older kids who are into art or making things can last longer, especially if you time it with a foundry demo. Weekday mornings are noticeably quieter — weekend afternoons bring tour buses and the courtyards get crowded. The village hosts seasonal events like Dia de los Muertos and a Festival of Lights in December that are worth checking the calendar for.

Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

Weekday mornings before 11am — way fewer crowds and cooler temps in summer. Holiday weekends get packed.

Wait Times

No wait to enter. Individual galleries and restaurants can have 10-20 min waits on weekends.

Nearby Food

Oak Creek Brewery & Grill is right inside the village and has a solid kids menu with $8-$10 options. Rene at Tlaquepaque is fancier but surprisingly kid-tolerant with high chairs available. For cheaper eats, Creekside Coffee is good for pastries and drinks.

Why Kids Love It

The whole place looks like a Mexican village with stone archways, fountains, and sycamore trees — kids treat it like a maze to explore. There's a creek running along the back where they can toss leaves and watch the water. Several galleries let kids watch artists work on blown glass, pottery, and bronze casting, which holds their attention way longer than just looking at finished art.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Park in the free lot off AZ-179 — it fills by 11am on weekends so arrive early
  • The bronze foundry demonstrations happen most weekdays and kids are genuinely fascinated watching molten metal get poured
  • Walk down to the Oak Creek access behind the village — flat path, easy with a stroller, and kids love throwing rocks in the water
  • Restrooms are tucked in the back near the south courtyard — not obvious, ask any shop owner

What to Bring

  • Sunscreen and hats — most walkways are shaded but the parking lot and some courtyards aren't
  • Water bottles for everyone
  • A light jacket if visiting October-April — the shaded courtyards get cold
