About

Slide Rock State Park is Sedona's most iconic family attraction -- a natural water slide carved into red sandstone by Oak Creek in the heart of Oak Creek Canyon. The park sits on the historic Pendley Homestead, an apple farm established in 1912, and combines natural swimming with stunning red rock scenery.

The main attraction is the 80-foot natural slide -- a stretch of smooth, algae-covered sandstone where Oak Creek flows through a narrow channel. Kids and adults sit in the shallow creek water and slide downstream, picking up speed on the slippery rock before splashing into deeper pools below. The slide is completely natural -- no concrete, no engineering, just millions of years of water polishing rock into the perfect water park.

Beyond the main slide, Oak Creek offers swimming holes of varying depths, calm wading pools for younger or more cautious kids, flat rock areas for sunbathing, and smaller slide chutes upstream. The creek is bordered by towering red and white canyon walls, making the scenery as memorable as the swimming. In fall, the canyon's deciduous trees turn gold and orange against the red rock.

The park does reach capacity on summer weekends, often by 9-10 AM. Once full, rangers close the entrance until visitors leave and free up parking. This is the single most important planning detail: arrive early on weekends, or visit on a weekday. The water is cold year-round (60-65°F), which is refreshing in Arizona's summer heat but surprises some visitors.

The Pendley Homestead apple orchard remains on the property, and apple picking is available in September and October. Short hiking trails offer views of the canyon and orchard. Restrooms and changing areas are available near the parking lot.

Best Time to Visit

Late May through September when water levels are ideal. Summer weekdays are less crowded. The park often hits capacity by 10 AM on summer weekends -- arrive by 8 AM or come after 3 PM when people leave. Water is always cold (60-65°F even in summer).

Wait Times

No wait once inside. The park itself reaches capacity on summer weekends and closes to new arrivals -- sometimes by 9-10 AM. Weekdays rarely fill up.

Nearby Food

No food inside the park. Indian Gardens Cafe & Market (5 min south on 89A) is excellent for sandwiches and breakfast. Garland's Indian Gardens is a Sedona institution. Back in town: Creekside Coffee is family-friendly, and Tlaquepaque has upscale options.

Why Kids Love It

A natural water slide carved into red sandstone by Oak Creek -- kids literally slide down smooth rock chutes into swimming pools formed by the creek. The main slide stretch is about 80 feet of slippery algae-covered rock that sends you gliding into cool mountain water. It feels like nature built a water park.

Beyond the slides, the creek has calmer pools for wading, deeper sections for swimming, and flat rocks for sunbathing. The red rock canyon walls tower above, making the scenery as memorable as the swimming. Kids who are nervous about the slide can wade in shallow pools nearby.

The combination of thrill (sliding on rocks into cold water) and beauty (red canyon walls, clear creek water, apple orchards on the banks) makes this a top-5 family memory for most Sedona visitors.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Arrive before 9 AM on summer weekends or the park will be at capacity and turn you away
  • Water shoes are essential -- the rocks are slippery and can be rough on bare feet
  • The water is cold year-round (60-65°F) even when air temps are 100°F -- bring towels and warm layers for after swimming
  • The historic Pendley Homestead apple orchard is on the property -- pick apples in fall (Sept-Oct)
  • Walk upstream past the main slide area for less crowded pools and additional smaller slides
