About

Bell Rock is one of Sedona's most recognizable formations -- a massive red sandstone butte that genuinely looks like a bell rising from the desert floor. The Bell Rock Pathway and surrounding trail system offer one of the best family hiking experiences in Sedona, with options ranging from a flat, paved stroller walk to hands-on rock scrambling.

The Bell Rock Pathway is a 3. 6-mile out-and-back trail (or loop with Courthouse Butte) that starts from the Bell Rock Vista trailhead off Highway 179. The first section is paved and nearly flat, suitable for strollers and very young walkers.

As you approach Bell Rock, the trail transitions to packed dirt and mild red rock terrain. The views are constant and stunning -- Bell Rock ahead, Courthouse Butte to the north, and the Sedona red rock panorama in every direction.

For families with capable kids ages 7 and up, the real adventure begins at the base of Bell Rock itself. Social trails lead up the lower slopes of the formation, where kids can scramble on sandstone with natural hand and foot holds. The rock is grippy (not slippery), and the lower sections have moderate exposure.

Most families climb to the first or second 'ledge' where the views expand dramatically. Going higher requires more confidence and route-finding ability.

Bell Rock is one of Sedona's four famous vortex sites -- locations believed to radiate spiritual energy. Whether or not your family subscribes to vortex theory, the site has an undeniable presence. Older kids and teens find the concept fascinating, and it adds a layer of mystique to the hike.

Timing matters. Early morning (before 9 AM) offers cooler temperatures and golden light on the rock. Sunset is equally dramatic. Midday in summer pushes past 100°F with no shade on the trail. Spring and fall are the ideal hiking seasons in Sedona. Parking fills early on weekends -- have a backup plan (Court House Vista trailhead).

Best Time to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon for best light and cooler temps. Sunrise and sunset make the red rock glow. Avoid midday in summer (100°F+). Spring and fall are ideal seasons. The base trail is manageable year-round.

Wait Times

No waits on the trail. Parking at the Bell Rock Vista trailhead can fill by 9 AM on weekends. The Court House Vista trailhead (also accesses Bell Rock) is a backup option.

Nearby Food

Red Rock Cafe (10 min, Village of Oak Creek) is a beloved breakfast spot -- enormous portions, huevos rancheros, and cinnamon rolls. Cucina Rustica (Italian, upscale but family-welcoming) is 10 minutes north. For quick bites, the Oak Creek Espresso shops are nearby.

Why Kids Love It

Bell Rock looks exactly like a giant bell rising out of the desert, and kids can walk right up to it and climb on the lower sections. The base trail is flat and easy, winding through desert scenery with the massive red rock formation growing larger with every step. It feels like walking into a movie set.

For adventurous kids (ages 7+), scrambling up the lower slopes of Bell Rock itself is the highlight -- hands-on-rock climbing without ropes, with expanding views of red rock country with every step higher. The rock has natural hand and foot holds that make it manageable for capable kids.

Bell Rock is also considered a Sedona vortex site, which adds mystique for older kids and teens interested in the area's spiritual reputation.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • The base loop trail (3.6 miles) is flat and easy for all ages including strollers on the paved sections
  • For adventurous kids 7+, scrambling up the lower sections of Bell Rock is thrilling -- stick to well-worn paths and stop when it feels exposed
  • Sunrise at Bell Rock is spectacular -- the rock glows orange-red in the first light
  • Carry more water than you think you need -- desert air dehydrates fast, especially kids
  • Combine with nearby Courthouse Butte loop for a longer hike (adds 1.5 miles)
