Green Lake Park Playground

Green Lake Park is Seattle's most beloved neighborhood park, and for families with children of any age, it delivers one of the best free days in the city without requiring any planning beyond 'show up.'

The park centers on a small urban lake with a 2. 8-mile paved loop trail. The loop is flat, wide, well-maintained, and shared between walkers, joggers, cyclists, and families with strollers — the inner loop is non-motorized only, making it safer for young cyclists learning to ride.

On summer weekends, the loop is filled with families on bikes, tandem bikes, and scooters, with kids of every age keeping up in their own way.

The playground sits near the east side of the lake with equipment spanning toddlers through tweens. It's not the park's signature feature but serves its role well for families who want structured play time before or after the lake loop.

In summer, two designated swimming beaches open for lake swimming. The water is shallow near the shore and warmer than Puget Sound — families spend summer afternoons at the beach without the drive to an ocean beach. Check seattle.gov for swim season dates and any algae bloom closures (occasional).

Paddle boats, rowboats, and kayaks are available for rent at the dock on a seasonal basis — typically $20-30 for 30 minutes. The Evans Pool (indoor) is adjacent to the park for rainy-day swimming.

Food situation: pack a full picnic. Green Lake has no restaurant on-site. The surrounding neighborhood has excellent cafes and restaurants on East Green Lake Drive N, but you'll leave the park to access them. The picnic areas near the lake are worth planning around — eating by the water while ducks wander nearby is the real Green Lake experience.
